Review: Crave by Monica Murphy

Sorry I’m late on my Review posts folks! I’ve been very bust as of late and more to come but I hope to be back on track soon.

Crave CVRCrave (Billionaire Bachelors Club #1)

Blurb:

Billionaire Archer Bancroft always gets what he wants—and he’s wanted Ivy Emerson, his best friend’s sister, for far too long. Being forbidden and untouchable only makes her more tempting. When a million-dollar bet with his friends throws down a challenge—last bachelor standing takes all—Archer knows he can win. That is, until one enchanted evening with Ivy takes his heart for a ride

Ivy knows Archer is nothing but bad news: Infuriating, arrogant…and completely intoxicating. But despite her best efforts, she can’t seem to keep away. When a stolen kiss leads to a night of heated passion, Ivy realizes she’s in trouble and in head over heels.

But in the light of day, everything seems clearer and Archer’s not so sure a one-night stand is all he wants. Concocting a plan to keep Ivy by his side, Archer might just be willing to lose this bet…and win the jackpot instead.

Review:

Okay, I really, really liked this book. Although it was short, it had a lot of character depth and chemistry!

I really like how this story was told from two POVs: the hero, Archer and the heroine, Ivy.
I know the blurb said that Archer wanted to be the last man standing but we find out that he wasn’t really sure that he would be the last one standing because he has always had a thing for Ivy.

I loved how open minded he was to himself about his feelings for this girl. And I thought it was truly amazing a how Monica wrote about it from Archer’s POV. I felt like it was true and honest and come on, the girl’s the sister of his best friend Gage. You know that is off limits and forbidden! Drama drama drama~

But then at the same time Archer can’t help but lose himself in her presence and the feelings grow higher and higher to uncontrolled heat! You can’t turn a blind’s eye on the feelings of the heart you know. And Archer’s not one to take No as an answer lightly.

I liked Ivy. She had crushed on Archer years ago as a child but learn that he was no good for her, especially when he’s best friends with her brother!  But years had gone by without a hitch or more than a fleeting glance and now he wants to be closer, as in adult relations: acquaintances!

I liked that Ivy knew what kind of person her brother and his friends were and knew to not mess with their thing. But I also adored how she fitted in somewhere with them and how they all got along nicely like a family.

I really liked how she would turn the tables on Archer and make him…weak, in awe, just…dumbfounded. She obliviously know how to work around Archer and get him off guard. But then I also didn’t like how she went too easily when she had told herself time an time again the total opposite of what she was going to do, want or need.

Example: Ivy didn’t want to sleep with Archer and told him straight up that she didn’t want to sleep with him. And then she goes and asked him to do her a favor and they end up sleeping with each other! Come on~argh. At least I was all well and in with Archer and his intentions. Ivy just….tsk tsk tsk

I really do adore Ivy and her wit. And Archer is just adorable but rough and a jerk, at times, but they really do work together and compliment one another fabulously!

one other thing, I did want to go more into depth with Archer’s family because that was one thing that really stuck out from him. Even though we got to know his family background through little thoughts and stuff from both POVs i really wanted him, Archer, to explore it more for us and maybe to Ivy too just so that we as readers (or just me) can get to know that side of him more that what we’re shown to know.

But anyways, like I said wrote, I really enjoyed or even loved this story! So if you want a quick fast romance with steamy scenes, this book is for you! Or just a quick read is also fine.

Review: eARC A Return Engagement by Stephanie Laurens

A Return EngagementA Return Engagement (Originally in the anthology, Royal Bridesmaids)

Stephanie Laurens

Release Date: August 27, 2013

Blurb:

A delightful novella from #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens.

Everyone’s eyes are on a royal couple, but there is more behind the scenes than they’ll ever know.
Lady Nell Daughtry is certain her sister will be a perfect princess, if only she gets the reluctant bride safely to the church to marry Prince Frederick of Lautenberg.

But what she doesn’t know is that, in the wedding party, she’s been paired with her former fiancĂ©, Robert Knightly … and now she’ll be face-to-face with the man who walked away.

~~~~~~~
Review:
I have been waiting to read this novella from Stephanie Laurens. More like, waiting to read the whole anthology in which it was published with! But still this works to my liking.
This was a fast, short, and loving romance. It’s vastly different from her usual works of hot sexy alpha males, saucy strong heroines, and very steamy love scenes. And I know because I have a whole bookshelf full of Laurens’ works!
Lady Cornelia Daughtry, Nell, has positioned herself as her sister’s companion and chaperone during her sister’s preparation for her wedding. She’s in charge of keeping her sister on track and from wedding nerves of any kind. Least to other’s knowledge the ladies of her mother’s blood line all carry a curse. The Vayne curse. Every Vayne lady has befallen to its failing upon their wedding week, leaving them with nerves, panics, and jilting runaway thoughts. So to keep her sister from it’s grips she has vowed to stand near to prevent it from ruining the wedding. She is also partnered up with her long lost love. Whom she planned to keep clear of if anything is to be done.
Robert Knightly is on diplomated work preparing for his friend Fredrick’s wedding and surprise to see Nell attending to her sister’s needs, or more like hiding something from drastically ruining the wedding plans! When he learns of its curse within the family, he couldn’t help but think of nine years past when Nell herself had shown signs of its curse. Now that he’s older and wiser, he’s even more determined to never let her go again, even if the curse comes creeping back.
This was a very different experience for me reading this type of romance from Laurens but I really enjoyed it.
Though we didn’t get into a lot of the character developments that Laurens is great at we still saw a lot of their personality through their actions, words, and thoughts.  I was also very surprise that she didn’t have any of her very descripted and long love scenes. Although they were nice in some of her novels and not in others, I though it was very well, unused in this novella.
I know that that’s the whole point of novellas, that they have to be short but I thought it was great that Laurens didn’t add her steamy love scene because, come on, we know what goes on already. A tumble of naked bodies and bedsheets are all we need to get our fantasies and imaginations going. Well, some of the time. Teehee ;)
Anyways, I loved it. It was quick and romantic. Though there wasn’t much romance I’m afraid, it was still a great quick read to pick up.
That’s it! Sweet is what I was looking for. And I’ll place this romance in that category.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Review:

I have been waiting to read the next installment from Manda ever since I’ve finished her Ugly Duckling series and this is it. This was what I have been waiting for.

So we have the prologue starting off with a death (wasn’t sure how it was going to go from there) but it needed to start somewhere right? But yes, a death.

(This is where Manda got her ideas for the series from. She was thinking of scary films and what not and then it hit her…wham! I know what you did last season! –Okay, yeah I stalked her at one of her blog chats and got this info from her but I needed to know, you know. I have to creep around my authors to get the good stuff out of them. I thank you very much.)

This leads to the heroine, Isabella, being blackmailed by her godmother (yes, her very own upstart sneering godmother) to set against her to travel to Yorkshire to retrieve (more like seduce) the new Duke, the hero, Trevor, to come to London and hold his position to the family (and be controlled by the godmother, which is his grandmother).

There were lots of things that happened in this story. It was rather a slow start to the story but it was an okay pace. The story of a blackmailer began to appear the second Isabella arrived in town which I thought was a great plot to move the relationship between the two along.

Isabella thinking Trevor a mere country man got a surprise of her life when she meets him and finds that he actually lives in a very comfortable life. Trevor also finds Isabella enticing and very well knowledgeable in politics and other likes. Both characters were very likable and have flaws but also demons they had to over come. I also loved seeing them change throughout the story and see them come to trust and believe in each other as they come to know one another better during their acquaintance.

I definitely loved Eleanor and Belinda, sisters of the Duke! They were so sweet and naive at times and so lovable I wanted them as my very own friends! Eleanor, at seventeen is very sweet, gentle, soft spoken and kind girl who want to be a young woman and ready for her debut. While Belinda, at thirteen was wild, out spoken, curious, opinionated and is a playful child who loved the country and never wants to leave.

Trevor is very protective brother and I understood him so well on that front because, well, they’re his sisters and they will forever be children to him. I found it very sweet that he never want them to grow up and when Isabella came into their lives and started dressing Eleanor in dresses proper enough for a seventeen year old girl. Trevor thew a fit! It was very touching, although absurd that he would not want his sister to look like the young woman she has become, it was very assuring that he loved her and Belinda very much to want them to stay kids under his protection forever~

“If it were up to me she’d wear pinafores and her hair in braids for the rest of her days.” -Trevor, Duke of Ormonde. p.238

As the relationship between Trevor and Isabella moved forward I was surprise that there wasn’t much for them to stand on for the relationship to actually process in its direction. I was kind of sad that there wasn’t more tension and attraction rays shooting off the tops of their heads at each others’ presence. It was a slow start but everything also seemed to have been forced together for them to be together in a way.

And their first kiss scene was….not what I wanted. Though it may have been the right time there was just not enough tension for it to be a great first kiss for the two of them for me. Even if it was well into the book and well past the half point.

But back to the story of finding the culprit who’s blackmailing and threatening Isabella. Sadly I kind of figured who that person was from the gecko. But it was still a great read figuring it out if it was other people that were popping up in the story. (Sorry if I’m giving away spoilers.)

I did have problems with the use of character’s names. At certain points in the dialogues the names of characters would change and it confuse me like heck!

For example, at first the character was referred to by their first name, Lucian, in every dialogue he’d spoken in the beginning of the conversation with Trevor. But then, this Blackmore entered the conversation and I was at a lost! I had to re-read the whole passage and flip back to the beginning to find this Lucian gentleman just to see his full name and title, but to also make sure I wasn’t missing another gentleman in the room hearing upon this private conversation between the two. Bold and be hold Lucian is Lord Blackmore! I was very annoyed by this I shall say.

I was also annoyed by the characters not referring to the other character’s name. Many times when Isabella (in her own view) was in dialogue with Trevor, the Duke of Ormonde, she (or Ms. Manda) referred to him as “the Duke“. Why can’t she just simply state him as Trevor or Osmond, instead of “the Duke said” or “the Duke this or that” ? (I’m sorry if I’m being harsh but it just really bothered me as I was reading.)

I really did really like this book beside all those problems. And I really adored the friends I found in this book! Sir Lucian Blackmore is one secondary character I can’t wait to see! a friend of Trevor, we got to see a bit of his side and he is definitely a very hero-esque character. But I’m super curious and a little bite scared of what the next books will entail for him. (His book is not next but still! We got to see a bit of his romantic interest.) I’m not so sure who will end up with who because there were so many lovable characters that I’m not sure what Ms. Manda Collins will have for each of them. (well for the third book, that is.)

This story ends with a good ending but the culprit at large still has more victims to target so we’ll have to see what we find of him/her in the next book.

Review: eARC What the Bride Wore by Jade Lee

what the bride woreWhat the Bride Wore (Bridal Favors #3)

Jade Lee

Blurb:

Grant Benton, Earl of Crowle finally has the funds he always pretended to have and what he wants now is a woman. That woman is Lady Irene Knopp, who spends her days helping debutantes plan their weddings. A recent widow, Irene longs for love again, but she’s afraid to risk her heart, especially to the notorious Grant Benton.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Review:
I have to say I’ve been waiting to read Grant’s book ever since I’ve read his younger brother’s, Will’s novella, Winning a Bride.
That book was great and I couldn’t wait to read Grant’s. So here we are with Grant’s and well, it was okay.
In Winning a Bride we got to see Will’s point of view of how he saw his older brother Grant and it wasn’t a great view of him. He was portrayed as a lazy, no good rouge, who was just like their father and grandfather throwing and wasting their money away on women and gambling halls.
Even though I saw that side of Grant through Will’s eyes I didn’t dislike him but felt bad and knew something was up with Grant’s disappearance.
Onto the book.
We first see Grant before he left Yorkshire that one fateful day on his sister’s wedding day. And of course on the very same day he burned down their barn and got cut from his brother Will (we learned about this a bit in Will’s novella).
I new from that very first moment that I would love and adore Grant. He touched my heart and I pained for him dearly. His  dear sister had to marry herself off to help the family with their father’s spending. And Will damned himself for being unable to prevent his sister from marrying a man old enough to be their father. After the wedding Will decided to try to get some quick cash to pay off the debts but instead burned down the barn.
I felt so bad for him and knew that he was just trying his best to protect and afford for his family. But when Will came and started putting Grant down I really wanted to smack the back of Will’s head and put him straight! Didn’t he know that Grant was trying be a good brother and help the family as best he could!? Gosh I was so angry with Will!
But anyways, When we next saw Grant, five years has past and he was ready to buy their family land back from the Lawtons (whom we met in Will’s novella). Sadly it didn’t happen.
Grant had become a mill owner (against his best wishes) and had saved as  much and more so he can to buy back the land and it had come to naught. The land had become valuable due to the repairs and canal Will had added to the land, so now the land exceeded what Grant hoped to have paid. But he did meet the widowed Mrs. Irene Knopp who he sold his valuable cloths to from his mill to buy back his land.
After failing to buy the land back he lost hope but then tried to find a way to wed Lawton’s daughter, whom the land was placed into her dowry. He then found out that she was to be marry. And to no other than his Brother!
I know! I was still sock even though I read Will’s novella already and knew they were to wed but still. It really pained me seeing Grant find out that way and that the land he worked so hard for was to be given to his brother. But at least it was back into Crowle’s hands, right?
And so Grant let if off, for a bit. And so there was Irene. Grant decided he had to keep his gentleman background, title, and past a secret from her if he wanted to be in her company.
Irene has secrets of her own. She’s a Lady, daughter of a gentleman who has also lost coins due to gambling. But now she’s a widow of a sailor working at her friend’s modist shop as a purchaser of fabrics and the likes. She loves her job but fears that if people found out she is the daughter of a gentleman gambler she would bring the shop down.  But meeting Grant brought on a whole new world and disordered her life and emotions. He’s so different and she doesn’t know what to think or do when she is pulled into his life.
I really liked Irene when I met her. She was strong, smart, and knew what she was talking about and still looked good and kept a man on his toes to what will come out next from her mouth and from her mind. But no, it didn’t stay that way.
As the story progressed she started to fall out of it and became vulnerable. I guess that’s her true image and I thought it was nice seeing that side of her but I didn’t quite like or enjoyed it. It worked well with how the story was going even if I wanted her to still be that strong woman from the beginning but she just kept on becoming a lady I didn’t like. Her thoughts weren’t what I expected from her, especially her thoughts of Grant. She couldn’t make up her mind if she wanted to be with him but she wanted to keep on sleeping with him. And yet she didn’t want to have the name of being his mistress! I rolled my eyes~
And then there were those times where she would push him away for dumb reasons and her thoughts weren’t nice about him and I just wanted to slap her. Gosh Grant deserved better.
The relationship between Grant and Irene was nice but it felt…..I don’t know! Long and short at the same time. Or slow? All the problems were just Irene’s fault. She couldn’t make up her mind when Grant had already made up his, which I really liked. He knew what he wanted and was patient enough to wait for Irene to realize it. If she were to go with her heart the first time and stop having thoughts and fears, I would have been finish with the book sooner and the book would have been shorter.
I really thought her clueless when he told her a secret of his and she placed it on a pedestal as a fault (in her mind) and feared that it will passed along to their children (if that ever happened!). She used that as stepping stone to decide if she wanted to be with him. Yeah! How low does she think of him to use that against him and marriage!
Anyways I lost interest in the story sadly. I really wanted the story to stay focus on Grant and his progress in the mill and around his family but sadly it didn’t stay that way. It moved to a mystery story around a murder plot.
Though it did work for a time and brought Grant’s brother and his past into the story, after that it just went blah for me.
I kind of saw it useless afterwards; after he mended his relationship with his brother and told them of his past five years and the mill, there was just nothing after that. And what happen to the mill? Did Grant go back to it and started working again or did he just leave it to his men and lived the life he can have once again? So frustrated….
I love you Jade but, you lost the story for me when it changed into a mystery plot. I hope I’m not too harsh but I just wanted to be honest with my review.
Review: eARC How to Marry a Highlander by Katharine Ashe
How to Marry a Highlander (Falcon Club, #3.5)How to Marry a Highlander (Falcon Club #3.5)
Katharine Ashe
Blurb:
Duncan has no intention of wedding the meddlesome maiden, and he gives her a deadline even the most audacious matchmaker can’t meet—one month. But Teresa sets terms, too: with each bridegroom she finds, the earl must pay her increasingly intimate rewards . . .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Review:

This is a novella and part of Katharine’s loving series the Falcon Club! I’m super super happy that I picked this baby up and read it. Shall I say the synopsis was the thing that hooked me to this book rather than the smexy cover? Laaaa~

Okay, so there’s this English proper country miss Miss Teresa. She has been
in…carrying an faction for a Scottish Earl, Duncan, for over a year after glimpsing him staring at her from across the room at a Lady B’s ball back in book 3 of the series, How a Lady Weds a Rouge. And then he disappears back to Scotland.

And so she devise a plan to marry him because 1) he has returned to London and 2) she didn’t want to marry a country Reverend (she’s too wild for that you know) and 3)………well, if the Scottish Lord didn’t want to marry her she wanted a kiss from him to mope over when she’s back in the country, married to the country Reverend.

And so the games begin when she sets a wager to settle his 7 sisters. And for Each wager won she received a prize in the form of, bumpbahh bahhbum drum rolls…..him~

I can truly say that I was enamored with this plot. Seven sisters! That’s crazy but I highly enjoyed the set up for romance.

I loved that Teresa was shown as a proper young lady who’s tired of her life in the country with barely a suitable match in sight. How she had a witty countenance within her waiting to escape their confines and release her self from their torture. I also loved that she had a writers great fantasy daydreamers’ mind! She’s a storyteller and a great liar of forming fake events to cover for her attention lapses. Though her thoughts at times were reasonable, witty, and understood, others…just….weren’t so sure….

“She wanted to be the spring ewe to his ram. She wanted to be the nectar in the bud to his hummingbird’s probe. She wanted him to make her a woman in this hothouse.”

Yeah, the fancy saying and stuff just didn’t prick me the right way.

She also spoke very plainly at times which kind of threw me off because of her raring but that’s towards Duncan, at times. And I did forget her status in the social realm though. I wasn’t sure how she got to do things on her own without others’ knowing. She did get ball invitations from the help of her friends and aunt but still she would have been outcast just by escorting the impoverished and scandalous Scottish sisters about. But I love her determination, strong will, and sometime outrageous personality for standing by the young girls even with snickers from the ton.

Duncan is a likable hero. He’s the typical dark and broody male who is protective yet vulnerable at the same time towards his women brood. I love how he messes with Teresa and how control he is with her. He knows that he couldn’t impinged anything upon yet couldn’t help stay away and watch her play her magic upon his family. His past is a bit shady and he has a tortured soul and I know that we learn more of it in book 3 (which I’ll need). He’s honorable and super caring of his family and what more can you get.

On the other hand, I did have trouble with how some of the outcomes came about because I felt like I wanted more of them,  especially the sisters. I wanted to get to know each of the siblings a bit better and see how their relationships grew. I also had some trouble moving past some things added in the story; like When Duncan sold his timepiece for new clothes money. I was super hoping he’ll get it back, either from Teresa because she found out he sold it or by him repurchasing it. I was disappointed when that didn’t happen. It was a blow to me. And tore at me.

But I was highly excited to Ms. Maya Rodale’s Mr. Derek Knightly make an appearance in this novella~ And of course there was Lady B from the Ballroom Blog! :D

But all in all this was a great novella and now I’ll have to read myself backwards into the series to get all my info on these two couples and more. I’m just wondering if this is the last book for the series~

Review:
I was surprise that I liked this book about music, boys in man’s bodies trying to make it big in the music-Rock Star industry.

But I really liked how each chapter switch off back and forth from Nick to Simon so that we got to see what they were doing or thinking at that same moment which was awesome.

The two band mates are best friends and they are what we call opposites. They compliments each other and have something that the other doesn’t have but work very well together.

Though they do fight a lot. And I mean A Lot in this book they still come out pretty well.

I was surprise and glad that the story started off with the group already having problems and building tensions. It kept me on heighten senses of what will happen next to make all hell break loose!
When the two new members were added to the group: Gray and Jazz; even more tension were
added to the already on edge band. Although I really liked Gray and Jazz, in a way I felt like they were better off alone. They were the only two that were going to be going places in the music industry because they were both talented and are music geniuses. Gray, a guitar freak and Jazz plays the drums, key board and the guitar. Should I say Jazz is a girl! Yeah, and Gray is very protective of her. Some history there.

But when I first meet Nick I was impress with him. How he think and saw his friends, how he saw himself; he is a broken boy in a man’s body. He had a tough childhood and well, I felt for him. He is very attached to his band and he has trouble with change. But the biggest thing for him is being in a band and wanting to make it big but to have stage fright!? That was the biggest struggle for him- at the moment til the new members (Jazz).

When we’re in Nick’s head I can say that I disliked his friends/band mates. Seeing them from his view was like seeing people you couldn’t work with, people who won’t contribute anything to the group but good looks and leaving everything for you to do. But than we get into Simon’s head and well, all that changed….

Simon was intriguing. I though I would dislike him from what I got from Nick’s view but, Wow, how wrong was I on that point! Simon is actually thoughtful and thinks highly of his friends, though he does act like a jerk because, hey, that’s what he has to do right? Play the jerk lead singer of a band and get the girls. I was surprise that he knows more about his friends than what he lead on. He really cares for them and Nick worries him greatly which I adored~ But I love seeing him from his head and well, we get to see how much I changes too.

Deacon, the bass guitarist in the group was also great.  I really liked him at first because he was the quiet rational peace maker of the group but later I fell out of him.

I loved seeing their struggles through both of their eyes because they both see things so differently. But I do at times wished that they would just speak with each other and get everything off their chest and mind and relax. I know they’re guys, but it would have loosen some tension between the band.

I did have problems with Jazz sadly. I Liked her and her sassy spunky self but I felt like she was the trouble in the band and well, I agreed with Nick and Simon when their first thought was, “She will be trouble,” “That’s why girls aren’t suppose to be in a band.” (or at least a guy band at that). Though she did add spunk and attitude (and bring the guys) she just caused trouble and brought more rift and tension. Her relationship with Nick was cool but when she kept on coming on to him when he and she knew it was wrong, I just wanted her to leave or something and let them be because she should know better in a band! And Gray, poor Gray…. I guess I survived though.

Oh, and I did skim over some of the sexy scenes because I just wanted the story not the loving. They were great but I just didn’t feel it at that moment because of all the tension and I just wanted to see what would happen next.

After all this I think I adore Simon more just because. Nick is a great leader but I felt like Simon had more backbone. Though Simon didn’t show how much he loved the band like Nick did, he did as much as he could and needed to contribute to the band. He was that rake and rouge.

This book is fabulous! Filled with tension, action packed, erotica….love triangles! It was something new to me. Though it’s an NA, it is far from it, so be warned!!! As sad in the synopsis.

Both these ladies are great writers and really got down how men thinks. They are just fabulous!

This book was provided by author: Cari Quinn for an honest review.

Welcome to Fetish Week.

Unleash your kinky side with three tales of BDSM romance in an exclusive Mediterranean sex resort from three hot erotica writers, including New York Times bestselling author, Sara Fawkes.

TAKE ME by Sara Fawkes The minute sexy hotel manager Alexander Stavros spots shy, sweet Kate Swansea at the Mancusi resort, he can tell she’s begging for release. This Dom is the perfect man to help her… if she’s willing to let go of her inhibitions and enjoy the ride.

 TEACH ME by Cathryn Fox There’s nothing Luca Mancusi loves more than lingerie. So much so, he’s made it his business. Fashion design intern Josie Pelletier is supposed to be negotiating a deal with him, but as talks heat up, he can’t wait to teach her the ways of business…and BDSM.

TAME ME by Lauren Hawkeye CEO Marco Kennedy can’t help being drawn to Ariel Monroe. When he follows the pop star abroad to the Mancusi resort, she agrees to a deal: He’ll win her as a sub through pleasure…or he’ll disappear from her life. Ariel’s game…just as long as she doesn’t lose her heart too.

And now to the Special Bonus Scene!!!!

Tame Me (Fling)
Bonus Scene
By Lauren Hawkeye

 “I can’t believe we have to leave tomorrow.” Ariel Monroe rolled over on the massive bed and looked up through the golden fringe of her bangs. She groaned dramatically, playfully, and her lover, Marco Kennedy, grinned in response.

That grin faded as he studied her closer, crossing the plush carpeting of their suite to sit beside her. The mattress dipped beneath his weight, causing Ariel to slide closer to the heat of his long, hard body.

“What’s got you so worried, pet?” Taking her chin in his hands, Marco looked Ariel right in the eye, his expression the calm in the storm of her emotions.

 She didn’t try to pull away, didn’t try to hide what she was feeling. They’d only been together for two weeks, but she already knew that he wouldn’t settle for anything less than complete honesty and openness.

“I—” The words stuck in her throat, and she tried to swallow past the lump that they created. The fingers holding her chin squeezed, urging her on.

“I’m worried about what will happen when we get back to the real world.” Propping herself up onto her elbows, Ariel blew her bangs out of her eyes and looked up at Marco, her expression more than a little mournful. She knew she was probably being silly… probably getting ahead of herself…

But the thought that what she had with Marco might not survive outside the walls of Italy’s Mancusi Resort hurt more than she cared to admit.

“What do you think will happen?” Marco’s voice was even, but Ariel thought she caught a hint of irritation, gone so quickly that she might have imagined it.

Still, she shifted warily. She’d been surprised to discover that she liked pleasing Marco—that she had a deep seated desire to do so.

But he’d asked her to tell him what was bothering her. Though they weren’t in formal Dom/ sub mode, she knew better than to disobey him.

“We’re both going to go back to work,” she started, squealing when Marco gathered her in his arms and pulled her into his lap, holding her close, his hand at the back of her neck. She stroked her fingers idly up and down his biceps—God, those biceps. She could stare at them for days.

“And?” Marco’s hand landed on her upper thigh, distracting Ariel from what she’d been about to say. When he cleared his throat, Ariel forced herself to continue.

“And I’m afraid you’re going to start to think of me like everyone else does,” she blurted out in one big rush. “I’m not worried that you’re after my money, of course—you’ve got plenty of your own. But I’m not the same person that I am on stage. I’m afraid you’re going to start thinking that I’m like… that.”

Ariel cringed as soon as the words were out of her mouth. She was a singer, what the tabloids termed a 'pop princess’. On stage she wore next to nothing and acted like a tramp. She didn’t mind, because it wasn’t really her.

 But more than one boyfriend had accused her of being a whore. Of fucking her way to the top.

The hand resting on her thigh squeezed, and the air fell ominously silent. Her pulse began to skitter through her veins, warning her of what her eyes told her only a moment later.

 She’d pissed off her Dom. And that could be a very dangerous thing to do.

 “Do you mean to say that you think I am going to think less of you when you return to the job that I already know you do?” Marco’s free hand moved from the nape of Ariel’s neck and down, sliding down her spine, over the wing of her shoulder blade and around to cup possessively over her breast.

“Um…” Ariel’s voice trailed off as her blood began to heat, both with nerves and with anticipation.

“Answer me.” Marco’s talented fingers pinched her nipple, hard enough to make her cry out.

“I… I don’t know. Sir. I hope not.” Her voice was breathless as Marco pinched the hard nub of flesh again.

“Hmm.” Without warning Marco stood, gathering Ariel in his arms. She was lifted, then lowered, turned so that she spread over the crisp duvet on her front.

She felt Marco position her limbs like she was a doll, tucking her elbows beneath her, spreading her legs.

She began to tremble.

“Don’t move. Don’t speak.” Marco’s voice was a low growl, and Ariel buried her face in the covers as she listened to his footsteps walking away. Finding a cool spot on the sheets, she pressed the suddenly feverish skin of her cheeks to it, desperate for just a moment of relief.

“I’m going to gag you now, Ariel. Do you understand why?” Marco was back, and Ariel felt the softness of a scarf trailing over the skin of her back. Goosebumps rose in its wake.

He’d asked her a question, but he hadn’t yet given her permission to speak, so Ariel nodded her head, the movement jerky.

 “Tell me.”

The silk of the scarf brushed over her lips tantalizingly, making her mouth water. She wished it was the head of Marco’s cock, rather than silk.

 “I… you’re gagging me because I… because I said that… I thought you might think differently of me. Out there.” The end of her sentence was cut off as Marco gently but with sure movements placed the scarf over her parted lips.

“Smart girl.” Marco pulled the silk over her cheeks and around, securing the ends behind Ariel’s head. Her tongue flicked out to dampen the slick fabric.

“The gag is to prevent any more insulting comments from leaving those sexy lips of yours.” Marco moved out of Ariel’s line of sight, and she squirmed with anticipation.

She heard a metallic snick, and then something cold closed over each ankle. She tried to move, found she couldn’t close her legs.

 Her excitement grew.

 “Now I’m going to flog you. I’m going to use a pussy whip right on that pretty pink cunt until you come. You’re going to have to take it. What you feel on your ankles are the cuffs to a spreader bar. No closing your legs until I say so.”

 Excitement fizzed through Ariel’s veins, hot and heady, as she listened to the sounds of Marco undressing behind her. She could just imagine what a picture he made, tall and rock solid, his olive skin glowing in the late afternoon sun, his erect cock in his fist, the tip already wet with arousal.

“I’m going to flog you until you come. Remember that if you’re thinking of trying to postpone the pleasure.”

Ariel heard the sound of the pussy whip slicing through the air before the supple leather ribbons landed on the juncture of her thighs.

She cried out, her voice echoing off the high walls of the suite. Heat rushed to the small area that the flogger had struck, and the cooler air of the room was a delicious contrast—almost too much.

 Instinctively she tried to close her legs. That she couldn’t caused arousal to surge through her in a tidal wave.

 “A lovely start. I do so enjoy seeing my mark on your skin.” Marco flicked the flogger again, then again, alighting nerve endings in a small circle of flesh.

God, but the man was good at this.

“Now.”

Ariel’s scream was muffled by the silken gag as the pussy whip landed right on the engorged flesh of her clit. Her body tightened like a rubber band stretched too tight, then snapped like that same elastic.

The orgasm was hot and hard, nearly brutal in its intensity.

When she would have collapsed onto the bed, Marco clasped her hips in strong hands. Positioning his cock at her entrance, he entered her in one hard thrust, setting a brutal pace that made Ariel’s breath catch in her throat.

When his own breath grew ragged and his thrusts short and hard, Ariel felt Marco tug at the fastening of her gag. The silk fell free, and she moaned as Marco seated himself inside of her one final time, the heat of his release spilling down the insides of her thighs.

 “Mine,” he growled as he squeezed her hips and, finally, stilled. Ariel collapsed onto the bed, feeling Marco’s weight on top of her, heavy and reassuring. “No matter what.”

 What they had between them was real. It could withstand the pressures of the real world.

 Sleepy and spent, Ariel smiled as Marco dipped his head and pressed a soft kiss to the stripe of her spine. Satisfaction, calm, love surged through her, and she was content.

 “Yes,” she agreed, arching into the press of his lips on her skin.

 “Yours.”

CHASING MORGAN
Chapter One
One year ago…

Morgan’s fingers flew across the laptop keyboard propped on her knees. She took a deep breath, cleared her mind, and looked out past her pink-painted toes propped on the railing and across her yard to the densely wooded area at the edge of her property. Her mind’s eye found her guest winding his way through the trees. She still had time before Jack stepped out of the woods separating her land from his. She couldn’t wait to meet him.

Images, knowings, they just came to her. She’d accepted that part of herself a long time ago. As she got older, she’d learned to use her gift to seek out answers.

She finished her buy and sell orders and switched from her day trading page to check her psychic website and read the questions submitted by customers. She answered several quickly, letting the others settle in her mind until the answers came to her.

 One stood out. The innocuous question about getting a job held an eerie vibe.

The familiar strange pulsation came over her. The world disappeared like a door slamming on reality. The images came to her like hammer blows, one right after the other, and she took the onslaught, knowing something important needed to be seen and understood.

An older woman lying in a bed, hooked up to a machine feeding her medication. Frail and ill, she had translucent skin and dark circles marring her pain-filled eyes. Her pain washed over Morgan like a tsunami.

The woman yelled at someone, her face contorted into something mean and hateful. An unhappy woman – one who’d spent her whole life blaming others and trying to make them as miserable as her.

A pristine white pillow floating down, inciting panic, amplified to terror when it covered the woman’s face, her frail body swallowed by the sheets.

Morgan had an overwhelming feeling of suffocating.

The woman tried desperately to suck in a breath, but couldn’t. Unable to move her lethargic limbs, she lay terrified and helpless under his unyielding hands. Lights flashed on her closed eyelids.

 Death came calling.

A man stood next to the bed holding the pillow like a shield. His mouth opened on a contorted, evil, hysterical laugh that rang in her ears and made her skin crawl. She squeezed her eyes closed to blot out his malevolent image and thoughts.

Murderer!

The word rang in her head as the terrifying emotions overtook her.

Morgan threw up a wall in her mind, blocking the onslaught of disturbing pictures and feelings. She took several deep breaths and concentrated on the white roses growing in profusion just below the porch railing. Their sweet fragrance filled the air. With every breath, she centered herself and found her inner calm, pushing out the anger and rage left over from the vision. Her body felt like a lead weight, and lightened as her energy came back. The drowsiness faded with each new breath. She’d be fine in a few minutes.

The man on horseback emerged from the trees, coming toward her home. Her guest had arrived.

Focused on the computer screen, she slowly and meticulously typed her answer to the man who had asked about a job and inadvertently opened himself up to telling her who he really was at the heart.

She replied simply.

You’ll get the job, but you can’t hide from what you did.

You need help. Turn yourself in to the police.

 None of her personal information appeared on the website, and she’d put a lot of time and effort into keeping her identity and location a secret for reasons of her own. He’d never find her.

A chill ran over her, despite the warm sun on her skin.

 She put through the charge and tried to erase the vision from her mind. She’d told him to go to the police. Nothing more she could do. She didn’t have any proof a crime had been committed. You couldn’t make accusations against people based on a vision. Even if she went to the police with what she knew, they wouldn’t take her seriously. She’d learned that the hard way.

The help she provided Tyler and the FBI was different. Her unique link with Tyler allowed her to assist him with some of his cases. Tyler had nothing to do with this man. She could ask him to investigate, but why would he? He had a hard enough time believing what she told him about the cases he was working on.

She didn’t want to have to convince him all over again that what she saw was real and true. It hurt to have to convince him every time, despite the ample proof she’d given him on multiple cases. After all this time, he should believe her - believe in her. She didn’t want to think about Tyler right now. He’d be in Colorado today. Close. Their connection that much stronger, and the harder he’d ignore it and push her away. Maybe she should give in and go see him.

Why couldn’t he stay in San Francisco?

 It wasn’t time for them to meet again. She sighed and tried to put him out of her mind. Not possible. They were connected on an elemental level, and had been for a long time.

Why did things between them have to be so complicated and difficult?

Dealing with her customers was simple. They went to her website and clicked on the link to ask a question. She charged fifteen dollars for requests she answered. If she couldn’t answer the question, or wouldn’t answer, she didn’t charge and sent a standard reply, telling the person she couldn’t help.

 Either the person believed in her enough to pay the fifteen dollars, or they didn’t.

Sure, they had to accept her Terms and Conditions. After all, what she “saw“ was open to interpretation and the result may not be what the customer expected. In shirt, if they didn’t like the answer, they couldn’t shoot the messenger.

 She specifically informed customers to beware what they ask, and how they ask it. You may get the answer to a question you hadn’t intended.

If you suspected your spouse of cheating on you, don’t be surprised if she confirmed it, and that the other person is your best friend. She wouldn’t lie, or tell you only what you wanted to hear.

In a few cases, she simply refused to answer. People often wanted to know when they were going to die and how. Her opinion, this kind of information did more harm than good. It usually altered the course of a person’s life, and she didn’t want to be responsible for changing one’s fate and destiny.

 One thing she knew for certain, life had a pattern. Mistakes are repeated until the lesson is learned. Knowing something ahead of time didn’t necessarily mean you could change the outcome. Some things were meant to be and nothing could stop them from ending the same way she saw them, even if the path that led to that end took a detour first. That wasn’t to say the course of the future couldn’t be altered. It could. She’d done it several times. For Tyler’s family, she’d do it again. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But wait~ Here's an excerpt of chapter 1 in this anticipated novella!!!

Chapter One

Sergeant Vic Carponti paused outside his company operations office, taking a deep breath. It was funny how their corner of Fort Hood felt deserted the night before a deployment. The company colors had already been cased. They would uncase them in a few weeks, once they got settled into their new home across the ocean in the middle of the war.

He didn’t know why this deployment was bothering him so much. It wasn’t his first time heading off to war, so he knew what to expect when the shit hit the fan in combat. But there was something hanging over his head this time. A fear that maybe this time his luck would run out.

He sighed and rubbed his face with both hands before walking into the company ops. The only thing they’d left up was the plaque that bore the names of their fallen brothers from the last deployment. The commander—Captain Trent Davila, a man Carponti had known for years—was planning on carrying that with him personally so it couldn’t ever get lost.

And so no one would ever forget. Carponti reached up and took it gently off the wall, then strolled into his company commander’s office with a nonchalance painted on his face that he damn sure didn’t feel. But people expected him to laugh and joke and make them forget the bad shit all around and so that’s what he was going to do.

“Don’t forget this,” he said, placing the plaque on Trent’s desk. He plopped down in a chair, then kicked his feet up on Trent’s desk. “Are you coming out with us tonight?”

Captain Trent Davila lifted one eyebrow at Carponti’s feet and said nothing. Carponti looked at his commander and longtime friend, then at the plaque next to his boots.

“Fine,” he said with a sigh, dropping his feet to the floor. “So answer the question.”

Trent sighed. “I can’t go out with you guys. I’m the company commander. I’m not allowed to have fun,” Trent grumbled. “Besides, my boss would have my nuts in a sling if anything happens while I'm there.”

“It’s the last day before our deployment. You’re allowed to have fun. You can just say you’re supervising all of us miscreants.” Carponti took the last Dr. Pepper out of Trent's fridge. “The deployment hasn’t even started and you already look stressed the hell out. You should be working your lieutenant to death instead of trying to do everything yourself.”

Trent shook his head and pushed his glasses to the top of his head. “Yeah, well, my new executive officer seems to think he’s God’s gift to the army. He’s good but he’s not as good as he thinks he is.”

“Oh, the boys just love him,” Carponti said.

“Really?”

“No, not really. He’s an arrogant fuck who believes his own press. Personally, I can’t stand him, but luckily I don’t have to deal with him much. I just sic Sarn’t Garrison on him.”

Trent grinned and reached for the plaque, sliding his hat on top of it so he wouldn’t forget it. “Yeah, Garrison has a way with words.”

Garrison was Carponti’s platoon sergeant. Garrison and Trent had been squad leaders many moons ago when Trent had still been enlisted. In Carponti’s world, it meant a whole lot that Trent had stayed close with his enlisted friends even after he’d crossed over to the dark side and become an officer.

“I’m swinging by his place on my way home. He needs to go out before someone shoots his grumpy old ass. He’s been a complete buzz kill since his wife left him.”

“Your sympathy is astounding,” Trent said dryly. He grinned and shook his head. “Why do we put up with you?”

“Because I’m charming and funny and good in a firefight?” Carponti said with a grin.

“Pretty much. You can make anyone laugh.”

“It’s an important life skill. Like balancing a checkbook. So seriously, find a babysitter and come out with us. Your wife could use some fun before she has to spend the year dealing with all the spouses in the Family Readiness Group and chasing your kids around while you’re off on another fun adventure.”

“I wouldn’t exactly call going to combat a fun adventure.” Trent rubbed his chest. There was a scar there, Carponti knew. A scar that had damn near killed Trent several years ago. Carponti wondered just how much stress his commander was carrying and not telling anyone. Trent’s face flushed when he realized Carponti had caught him rubbing his scar and he tapped the pencil hard enough to snap the eraser off. “You know, you’re right. Let me see if we can’t find a sitter.”

“Excellent. We’ll be congregating by the bar when you get there. Now I just have to go convince Garrison to come out with us.”

“Good luck with that,” Trent said, pulling his glasses down. “He’s on the verge of becoming a warrior monk.”

“Not if I have anything to say about it,” Carponti mumbled as he strolled out of his commander’s office. He wished he hadn’t seen the flicker of worry that flashed in his commander’s eyes when he’d mentioned his wife. He’d thought that Laura and Trent were one of the strongest couples he knew. She’d put up with him deploying back to back to back since he’d almost died a few years ago.

But that flicker of worry? Yeah, Carponti hadn’t missed it. There were problems there, hopefully small ones that Trent would take time to fix after this rotation into the sandbox.
Carponti looked down at his own wedding ring. It was his last night home and his last night with his wife.

He was glad he’d convinced her to come out with him and the boys. That way he could make sure they had a most excellent party and spend time with Nicole at the same time. He was going to spend part of  the night chaperoning his guys to make sure they made the most of it—which meant making sure no one ended up in jail—but then? Then the time he had left was going to be spent making his wife laugh.

Because try though he might, he couldn’t shake the quiet dread that settled in the pit of his stomach that tonight was the last night of normalcy he had on this earth.

Nicole Carponti breathed deeply and fanned her eyes, trying to stop the burning of hot tears. She leaned against the wall of the bathroom in Ropers and tried to stuff down all the churning emotions chained to the fact that her husband was leaving for war tomorrow. Again.

The first time he’d left she’d been scared, but then the war, the deployment…the waiting…it had all been unknown. She’d worked on finishing her degree and kept herself busy and waited by the phone like all the military wives who had gone before her.

The second time he’d left, she’d known better what to expect. The long waits between phone calls. The silence when he couldn’t talk long. The quick e-mails saying “I’m alive” that once upon a time would have been too little, but during the war were more than enough to keep her going.

But this time? This time was different. The Surge was different. They were sending in massive amounts of soldiers to try to quell the Iraqi insurgency. It was bloody and deadly and soldiers were getting attacked at higher rates than at any earlier time during the war.

And Nicole was terrified.

She had to hide it, though. She’d agreed to come out with him tonight just because it gave her a chance to pretend that she was fine. She had to keep everything in check until after he left. She couldn’t let him know how much she worried this time.

Fanning her eyes once more, she stepped out of the bathroom and into the rowdy country bar. A place like this was guaranteed trouble on a normal night, but tonight her husband’s platoon was rolling deep. Which was either going to be a really good thing or a really bad thing for her future job at the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division, depending on how cantankerous tonight got.

She spotted her good friend Laura Davila at the bar with a cute blond woman Nicole had met in the bathroom a little while ago. She had already completely forgotten the other woman’s name. She was terrible with names.

She wound her way through the pulsating crowd until she reached them. Laura grinned at her and she exclaimed, “I can’t believe you came out tonight.”

“You’ve already said this twice,” Laura said. They had to shout to hear each other.

Nicole flagged down the bartender and leaned around Laura to her friend. “I’m a terrible person but I already forgot your name. I’m Nicole Carponti.”

The petite blond held out her hand. “Jen St. James.”

“Nice to meet you, Jen. I won’t forget this time,” Nicole said with a smile.

Laura leaned toward Nicole. “I’m trying to get her out of her shell. She had cancer and she’s been struggling with her self-esteem ever since.”

Nicole frowned, glancing toward Jen, who was now trying to get the attention of the bartender. On the other side of her, though, was Garrison, her husband’s platoon sergeant. He was a big man and he was currently leaning down to talk to Jen. “How’s that for a self-esteem boost?” Nicole said, gesturing toward the two.

Laura glanced over, then quickly looked away before she was caught. Her eyes lit with a brilliant smile. “Oh, that couldn’t be more perfect if I had planned it.”

Nicole studied her friend through narrowed eyes. “Did you plan it?”

“I wish. But let’s just see how this little situation develops, shall we?”

Nicole raised her beer in mock salute to her friend. “You, m’dear, are a devious and loyal friend.”

“I’ll drink to that,” Laura said. “So how’s Carponti taking this deployment?”

Nicole heard the undercurrent in her friend’s voice. “You know how he is. Always cracking jokes, which I suppose is a good thing. I’m fucking terrified, though.”

“Yeah, I know. I’ve been talking to some of the spouses. The Surge has everyone terrified. One of the spouses told me it was a death sentence.” Laura took a sip from her beer, scanning the bar.

Nicole scoffed quietly. “How’s that for melodramatic?” But she didn’t voice her own fear that this deployment was going to be worse than the previous ones. “I don’t envy you as the Family Readiness Group leader.”

“Oh, come on, don’t you want to volunteer? You can be responsible for keeping me from going crazy. It’s a primary duty position, you know.”

Nicole laughed. “Not in this lifetime,” she said. “I always feel out of place once the spouses find out I’m pretty much a cop.”

Jen leaned over, rejoining their conversation as Shane wandered off in the direction of Laura’s husband. “What’s going on over there?” she said, pointing at Laura’s husband.

Nicole sighed heavily and took another drink. “Oh joy. Looks like Trent is giving one of his lieutenants some love. Couldn’t have the rest of the night without drama, could we?” She glanced back at Laura and Jen. “We should go interrupt before the second round of fireworks go off.”

Earlier Vic had gotten into an argument with Lieutenant Randall and now it looked like Laura's husband was finishing things off with the arrogant prick. The LT made Nicole’s skin crawl and she wasn’t looking forward to another bar fight. Not two in one night, that was for sure.

But whatever had happened was over now. She watched as LT Randall made a beeline for the door. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Garrison talking to Jen again. And Laura? Once Randall was gone, she and her husband moved off to a dark corner of the bar and were deep in conversation.

She hoped it was a good one. She didn’t like the worry she’d seen in her friend’s eyes when she talked about her husband.

She snuck up behind Vic, sliding her hands over his hips and up his t-shirt and the smooth hard skin of his body, placing a kiss at the little indentation at the indentation between his shoulder blades.

He turned and wrapped his arms around her shoulders. “There you are.” He kissed her fiercely, reminding her of how much she loved this man. “I was about to send out a search party for you in the little girls’ room.”

Nicole wrapped her arms around his waist and lifted her chin to meet his eyes. He was leaner than he’d been when he’d come home last year. His body was more solid from long ruck marches and hard training for this deployment. His eyes, though, were the same bright, mischievous green that they’d always been and she counted herself lucky that whatever he’d gone through in the war, he’d come home okay so far. She just prayed their luck held.

“No search party required,” she murmured against his lips. “I was talking to Laura. I’m impressed that you got Garrison and Trent to come out.”

“You should be,” Carponti grumbled, biting her bottom lip gently. “I had to guilt both of them into it. It’s like they both turned thirty and amputated their fun genes or something.”

Nicole laughed against his mouth. “Dance with me?” she asked.

“What in our history makes you think I know how to dance?” he grumbled even as he allowed her to lead him onto the dance floor.

“You’ll figure it out,” she said, sliding her arms around his neck. She rubbed her body against his, sensuously moving her hips in time with the music.

He dropped his hands to her hips, guiding her exactly where he wanted her. “Keep that up and we’ll have to sneak out to the car,” he said, his breath hot on her ear.

She nibbled on his bottom lip, biting it gently. “I think you’re trying to seduce me,” she whispered. She dug her fingers into his back, her blood humming with latent arousal. God but she loved this man.

“I’m absolutely trying to seduce you,” he said. He angled his thigh between hers, pressing close to the juncture of her thighs. The pressure sent vibrations through her body and straight to her core.

“I’m kind of ready to go home.” Her words were a gasp as he rubbed his thigh against her swollen center. “Before you get into any more fights with your lieutenant.”

“Can we not talk about work when I’m trying to turn you on?” he mumbled. He slipped his hand beneath the hem of her shirt, stroking his thumb down the centerline of her back. A shiver ran through her.

“You don’t want to talk about work? That doesn’t turn you on?” She undulated against him, grateful for the crush of bodies that swayed around them and enabled them to be lost in the crowd.

“No, trying to get you naked turns me on,” he said. “We really need to get out of here.” His breath traced over her ear a moment before he bit her earlobe gently, a fierce burst of pleasure in the pain.

“That sounds like a brilliant idea.”

He sighed as a commotion cleared a corner of the dance floor. “I hate being one of the responsible adults.” He kissed her hard. “Let me get everyone out of here first? That way no one goes to jail on our last night in the States.”

She kissed him fiercely. “I’ll be waiting over here for you to get done being all caveman.”

“I’ll show you caveman later,” he said with a grin before wading into the crowd and diffusing the situation between Garrison and Trent.

It took the better part of an hour before they’d shuffled everyone off to their respective cabs and vehicles. Nicole talked with Laura and Jen and tried not to notice how Jen kept watching Garrison. Oh now wasn’t that interesting?

It felt like forever before her husband strolled across the parking lot and scooped her up, carrying her toward their vehicle.

Their car was parked deep in a shadowed corner of the parking lot, and the moment her husband closed the door Nicole crawled into his lap on the passenger’s seat. He pulled her close, kissing her hard and fast. Pouring a thousand unsaid things into that kiss. His hand threaded into her hair and he slanted her mouth until he owned her—all of her—and she was lost in his taste, his touch.

Then he broke off abruptly. “What the hell?”

“What?”

“Who is that with Garrison?”

Nicole twisted around in time to see Garrison, one of Carponti’s oldest friends, lean in to kiss Jen.

“Oh now that’s interesting,” Carponti whispered.

Nicole spun around. “Don’t you say anything to him,” she said.

“Why not?”

“Because this is the first time Garrison has done anything for himself since his wife left him. Leave him alone.”

Carponti blinked innocently. “What makes you think I would say anything?” he said. His words slurred and Nicole grinned before fishing around in his pockets for his car keys. “A little more to the left.”

Nicole laughed then climbed into the driver’s seat as Garrison stepped back, letting Jen walk to an ancient sedan. “She’s cute. She’s friends with Laura.”

Laura, who was being carried across the parking lot by her husband. She hoped for Laura’s sake the happiness lasted longer than just tonight. The war was taking its toll on everyone, and Nicole had noticed more than once that there was a strain in her friend’s voice when she talked about her husband.

Vic just looked at her. “Oh really?”

Nicole drove them away before her husband could interrupt what had looked like something very sweet between Jen and Garrison. She’d known Garrison as long as she’d known her husband and it was long overdue for him to find someone that made him happy outside of the army.

She glanced at her husband, who had closed his eyes the moment the vehicle started moving, a lazy smile on his lips. Something warm bloomed inside her.

She wished Garrison could find the kind of happy that she had with Vic.
